Morton’s Neuroma is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot, most commonly the area between your third and fourth toes. Morton’s neuroma may feel as if you are standing on a small stone in your shoe or on a fold in your sock.

Morton’s neuroma involves a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes. It may occur in response to irritation, injury or pressure. In some cases, the neuroma causes a sharp, burning pain in the ball of your foot.

Symptoms

There are no obvious symptoms of this condition, such as a lump or swelling but instead you may experience:

•A feeling as if you’re standing on a pebble in your shoe

•A burning pain in the ball of your foot that may radiate into your toes

•Tingling or numbness in your toes

Treatment

At Advanced Physio West, the Physiotherapist will be able to assess your condition and provide you with the correct treatment depending on the severity of your symptoms. Treatments often include:

•address footwear issues

•correct biomechanical issues and make the forefoot stable

•refer to a medical practitioner if required

Orthotics devices and arch supports for your shoes can help reduce pressure on the nerve. Your Physio, who has specialist training in biomechanics, will assess your condition and determine whether you will need custom made orthotic devices or over the counter insole, which we can order for you.

If you would like more information on Morton’s Neuroma or other foot conditions, or to arrange an appointment with the Physiotherapist at Advanced Physio West in Roscommon or Galway, please phone 090 6626023/ 086 3758169 or book online
